Handmade, Heartfelt and Made With Love: Mother's Day at Chipmunks
There is a particular kind of excitement that runs through an early learning centre in the days before Mother's Day. Children who are usually pretty good at moving from one activity to the next become quietly, intensely focused when they know they're making something for someone they love. Secrets are kept (mostly). Gifts are finished with unusual care. And the educators who help them along the way get a front-row seat to something genuinely lovely.
This week across Chipmunks Childcare centres, that energy was everywhere.
Creating With Purpose: Why Handmade Gifts Matter in Early Learning
The Mother's Day gifts children made this week were not just a sweet tradition, though they are certainly that. They were also a vehicle for a remarkable range of developmental work. Fine motor skills were exercised through cutting, gluing, painting and decorating. Self-expression was encouraged as children made choices about colours, materials and design. Emotional connection was deepened as children thought about the person they were making something for and what would make them happy.
When learning has a genuine purpose, children engage more deeply. A child who is cutting paper for a gift they intend to give works with more care and concentration than a child completing an exercise for its own sake. Purpose is a powerful motivator at any age, but especially at three and four.
Keepsakes, Crafts and Community
At Chipmunks by the Bay, the youngest children in the Tiny Wanderers and Little Explorers rooms created special keepsakes for their families alongside their regular programme of sensory play, story time and imaginative experiences. The kinder children showed remarkable creativity and imagination in completing their gifts, and the genuine pride they felt in what they had made was clear to everyone in the room.
Our centres also hosted Mother's Day Afternoon Tea events this week, bringing mums, grandmothers and special mother figures into the centre to share an afternoon with the children. Events like these matter far beyond the afternoon itself. When families are welcomed into the life of a childcare centre, it strengthens the relationship between home and the learning environment, which is one of the strongest factors in a child's educational outcomes and overall wellbeing.
International Firefighters Day: Heroes in the Learning Environment
Alongside the Mother's Day celebrations, the week also marked International Firefighters Day on 4 May. Children across our centres explored community helpers and the role of firefighters through creative play, craft and discussion. This theme connects naturally to the broader work happening in our preschool rooms around community identity and belonging: understanding the people who keep communities safe is a meaningful entry point into civic awareness for young children.
Celebrating Every Kind of Family
At Chipmunks, we celebrate the full range of families that make up our community. Mother's Day is an opportunity to honour the mothers, grandmothers, aunties and special people who show up for children every day. Whatever that looks like in your family, it's something we love being part of.
If you're looking for an early learning centre where your family feels genuinely welcome, we'd love to show you around.
